Discover more about Kulosaari Church Bell Tower

The Kulosaari Church Bell Tower is a captivating structure that complements the Kulosaari Church in Helsinki. The Kulosaari parish was established in 1921, and the planning for a church began soon after. The bell tower, designed by Armas Lindgren, was completed in 1931, while the church, designed by Bertel Jung in the Jugendstil style, was completed in 1935. The bell tower marks the highest point on the island of Kulosaari, known locally as “the Temple on the Hill”. The tower is a traditional symbol of independence, self-sufficiency, and freedom. The bell tower and the church exemplify a transition from traditional religious architecture to modernist design principles in Finnish construction. The church and its surrounding milieu have been designated and protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency as a nationally important built cultural environment. The church's interior was designed by Armas Lingren's son-in-law, artist, Antti Salmenlinna. Bertel Jung's daughter, interior architect Gunilla Jung, designed various interior features including the silver baptismal font, while his niece, textile artist Dora Jung, designed the priest's chasuble in white silk velvet.
