Discover more about Temppeliaukio Church

Temppeliaukio Church, Finnish for 'Temple Square Church,' is a Lutheran church in the Töölö neighborhood of Helsinki, Finland. Completed in 1969, it's also known as the Church of the Rock or Rock Church, as it is built directly into solid rock. The church's origins date back to the 1930s when the site was selected for a church, but the design competition was interrupted by World War II. After the war, Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen won a subsequent competition in 1961 with their innovative design to integrate the church into the natural rock formation. Construction began in 1968, and the church was consecrated in September 1969. From the outside, only the copper dome is visible. The interior features rugged, natural rock walls, which provide a unique contrast to the modern design elements. The dome, lined with copper, is supported by reinforced concrete beams and illuminated by 180 skylights, allowing natural light to flood the space. The church organ, designed by Veikko Virtanen, has 43 stops and 3,001 pipes. Due to its excellent acoustics, the church is a popular venue for concerts.
