Discover more about Aulanko Observation Tower

Rising from Aulangonvuori Hill, the Aulanko Observation Tower is an iconic landmark offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into Finnish history. Constructed between 1906 and 1907, this 33-meter-high granite tower was commissioned by Colonel Hugo Standertskjöld, the visionary behind Aulanko's English-style park. The tower's design, reminiscent of a medieval fortress, was created by architect Waldemar Aspelin. From the top of the tower, visitors can admire the stunning Vanajavesi valley, a designated Finnish national landscape. The surrounding Aulanko Nature Reserve offers a diverse landscape of forests, lakes, and rock formations, inviting exploration and outdoor activities. Hiking trails wind through the park, revealing ancient oak and linden groves, as well as unique geological features. The area has a rich history, with evidence of settlement dating back over 10,000 years. Aulangonvuori Hill once served as a defensive fortress during the Middle Ages. Colonel Standertskjöld transformed the area in the late 19th century, creating artificial ponds, scenic viewpoints, and planting exotic tree species. The park also once housed Finland's first zoo. Today, Aulanko is part of Finland's first national urban park, offering a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. At the foot of the tower, a scenic lookout platform offers views towards Lake Aulangonjärvi. Nearby, the Karhut (Bears) statue, a soapstone sculpture completed in 1906, adds to the area's charm.
