Discover more about Torronsuo National Park

Torronsuo National Park, established in 1990, protects one of Southern Finland's most unique landscapes. The park's name, 'Torronsuo,' translates to 'Torro Mire,' highlighting its defining feature: a vast raised bog. This isn't just any bog; it's the deepest in Finland, with peat layers extending up to 12 meters thick. This remarkable depth tells a story of thousands of years of plant accumulation and decomposition in a waterlogged environment. Visitors can explore the open mire landscape via well-maintained trails, some featuring duckboards that allow passage over the wet terrain. The Kiljamo area serves as a central hub, offering accessible trails like Suopursupolku and Suokukkapolku, suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. These trails lead to scenic overlooks and the Kiljamo birdwatching tower, providing panoramic views of the bog. The Suotaival trail offers a longer, more challenging hike, including a 3-kilometer boardwalk section. Torronsuo is a haven for birdlife, especially during migration seasons. Cranes and geese are commonly spotted, making it a prime location for birdwatching. The park also boasts diverse flora, including cranberry, the park's emblem. In winter, the bog transforms into a snowy expanse suitable for cross-country skiing. The park's history extends beyond its designation as a national park. The area has long been recognized for its unique geological features, including quartz deposits and rare minerals.
