Discover more about Fellman’s Park

Fellman's Park, or Fellmaninpuisto in Finnish, is a verdant urban park located in the Kartano district of Lahti, Finland. Spanning approximately five hectares, it's conveniently situated near the city center, bordered by Paasikivenkatu, Ståhlberginkatu, and Kyösti Kallionkatu streets. Originally, the area was a field outside of Lahti. In 1918, during the Finnish Civil War, it served as a temporary prison camp for approximately 20,000 male Red Guard soldiers and thousands of women and children. The park's history is a poignant reminder of the war's impact on the Finnish people. In 1958, the city decided to transform the area into a park. City gardener Erkki Kivivuori oversaw the landscaping. In 1978, a monument called 'Red Captive' by Erkki Kannasto was erected to commemorate the events of the Civil War. President Urho Kekkonen attended the unveiling. Today, Fellman's Park is a place for leisure and remembrance. Visitors can stroll along walking paths, admire the mature trees and art installations, or have a picnic. The park hosts events and festivals throughout the year.
