    Discover more about Light Well

The Light Well, or Valokaivo, is a captivating art installation found in Lahti's central market square. Designed to resemble a traditional water well, it replaces water with an array of lights that react to the movements of people on its surface. Inspiration for the Light Well came from traditional draw wells discovered during excavations of the town square. The installation is built into a granite platform, placing it just above pavement level. A camera positioned above the well films people as they walk across the glass surface. This video is then processed by a media server, which generates interactive video content in real-time. This content is displayed by an array of lights inside the well, creating the illusion of white ripples on a blue background. The Light Well serves as a meeting point and a stage for small events in Lahti. It exemplifies Lahti's commitment to innovative urban planning and public art.
