The Finnish National Opera and Ballet is a cultural landmark in Helsinki, showcasing Finland's artistic excellence since 1911. Initially known as the Domestic Opera, it was founded by Aino Ackté and Edvard Fazer, with its first performance in the Alexander Theater. The ballet company was established in 1922. The company moved to its current home, a state-of-the-art opera house on the coast of Töölönlahti bay in the Töölö district, in 1993. The Opera House has two auditoriums: the main auditorium seats 1,350, while the smaller studio auditorium accommodates 300–500. Each year, the Finnish National Opera stages approximately four opera premieres and three ballet premieres, complemented by returning productions. The repertoire includes both classic and contemporary works, with a special emphasis on Finnish creations. Operas are generally performed in their original languages, following international practice. The Finnish National Opera and Ballet employs around 550 people from over 30 countries, including 53 opera singers, 74 ballet dancers, and 111 orchestra musicians. The Opera House also has a ballet school that provides comprehensive training for aspiring professional dancers.
