Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from Ruka, head east on the Ruka Ski Resort road (Rukatunturintie) towards Kuusamo. Continue on this road for about 15 kilometers. You will pass the intersection to the Ruka village area. After about 15 kilometers, you will see a sign for Valtavaara. Turn left onto Valtavaarantie. Follow this road for approximately 5 kilometers until you reach the parking area near the trailhead for Valtavaara Campfire Shelter. There is no parking fee, but ensure not to block any access roads.

• Public Transportation

  From Ruka, you can take a local bus towards Kuusamo. Look for the bus service that stops at Valtavaara. Buses may operate seasonally, so check the schedule in advance. Once you arrive at the Valtavaara bus stop, you will need to walk approximately 2 kilometers on the marked trail to reach the Campfire Shelter. Make sure to wear suitable walking shoes and carry water, as the trail can be a bit rugged.

• Hiking

  If you prefer to hike directly from Ruka, you can start your journey from the Ruka Ski Resort area. Follow the marked hiking trails that lead towards Valtavaara. The hike is approximately 7 kilometers one way and will take around 2 hours depending on your pace. It's important to check the weather conditions before you start, as some trails can be challenging in adverse weather.
