As Tampa developed, the tower became obsolete for fire detection.In the early 1990s, local residents rallied to save the tower and the surrounding land from development. Hillsborough County purchased the property, turning it into an urban wildlife preserve. Today, Hamner Tower Park provides a green space with the historic tower as its centerpiece. Visitors can explore the area, read informative plaques about the tower's history, and enjoy views of the surrounding city. The park is open daily from 8 AM to 9 PM.
