Getting There

Car

The Lotharpfad is located on the Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B500) between Alexanderschanze and Schliffkopf. From Baiersbronn, follow the Ruhesteinstraße towards Schwarzwaldhochstraße, passing through Mitteltal and Obertal. After approximately 14 km, you'll reach Ruhestein. Turn left onto the B500, and after another 8 km, the parking area for Lotharpfad will be on your right. From Freudenstadt, follow signs towards Strasbourg on the B28, passing Kniebis. At Alexanderschanze, turn right onto the B500. The parking area will be on your left after 6 km. Parking is free.
Public Transport

From Baiersbronn train station, take Bus 204 towards 'Baiersbronn Lotharpfad'. The bus ride takes approximately 25 minutes. Get off at the Lotharpfad stop. Check the bus schedule in advance as services may vary. A single bus fare within Baiersbronn is approximately €2-4.

From Baiersbronn train station, you can walk to Lotharpfad, following the signs. The hike is approximately 5.5 km and takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Ensure you have comfortable walking shoes and water.

Lotharpfad, located in the Schliffkopf Nature Reserve along the Black Forest High Road (B500) near Baiersbronn, is a unique and impactful testament to nature's regenerative power. This windthrow educational trail derives its name from Hurricane Lothar, which devastated the area on December 26, 1999, with winds reaching up to 200 km/h. The storm felled vast swathes of forest, leaving behind a landscape of destruction. Instead of clearing the area, conservationists and forest managers decided to allow the 10-hectare area to recover naturally. In June 2003, an 800-meter-long educational path was constructed to allow visitors to witness this process. The path meanders through the fallen trees, over steps, bridges, and footbridges crafted from the deadwood. An observation platform offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Braunberg, Lierbach, and Oppenau. On clear days, you might even spot the Feldberg, Kaiserstuhl, and the Alps.Walking the Lotharpfad provides a fascinating insight into how a forest recovers from a major natural disaster. The area has become a haven for insects and fungi, while new trees grow amidst the old. The trail is well-maintained and accessible for most hikers, though sturdy footwear is recommended.
