Designed by the King's architect, Mathurin Le Carpentier, this stone fountain was erected in the 18th century with the intention of providing a reliable source of drinking water for the citizens of Amiens, replacing the medieval wells.The fountain's design reflects the Louis XV era, featuring a large shell-shaped basin topped with a molding. At the center, a bearded man's head is sculpted, serving as the keystone. A bronze mask, reminiscent of King Midas, once spouted water into a large basin. Although the fountain no longer functions as a source of potable water, it stands as a beautifully preserved piece of Amiens' history.Over the years, the Fontaine Saint-Julien has been moved from its original location in front of the Saint-Leu church to its current site on Place Saint-Julien. It has also undergone restoration after suffering damage during past conflicts. Today, the fountain is a recognized historical monument, having been listed in 1940.
