Le Logis du Roy: A Glimpse into Amiens' Past

Le Logis du Roy, situated in the heart of Amiens, is a captivating architectural gem that whispers tales of the city's rich history. Constructed in the early 16th century, this building exemplifies the Flamboyant Gothic style, characterized by its intricate details and elegant design. The structure combines brick and stone, featuring a striking polygonal tower that houses a spiral staircase.Originally, the building belonged to the cathedral chapter before becoming the property of Jean de la Forge, a receiver-general of finances in Picardy, around 1520. It was rebuilt around this time. In 1565, it was acquired by the state to serve as the residence for the governor of Picardy. The building gained its royal association from housing such figures as Cardinal Richelieu in 1636 during the siege of Corbie and King Louis XIII in 1640 during the siege of Arras. Two attempts to assassinate Richelieu reportedly failed within its walls.Le Logis du Roy faced significant damage during the German bombings of World War II but was meticulously restored to its former glory. Today, its well-preserved facade and unique architectural elements, including mullioned windows and the octagonal tower, attract visitors. Adjacent to Le Logis du Roy stands the Maison du Sagittaire, another 16th-century building showcasing Renaissance style, further enriching the historical ambiance of the area. Although the interior is not open to the public, the exterior view provides a compelling glimpse into Amiens' past.
