Musée Pincé: A Renaissance Gem with Global Art

Musée Pincé is located in the heart of Angers, offering a journey through time and across continents. Housed in the Logis Pincé, a Renaissance hôtel particulier dating back to the 16th century, the museum provides a unique opportunity to explore diverse cultures and artistic traditions.The Logis Pincé was constructed between 1528 and 1535 for Jean de Pincé, a prominent figure and former mayor of Angers. The building exemplifies the elegance and architectural innovation of the early French Renaissance, blending French and Italian influences. Its historical significance was formally recognized in 1875 when it was classified as a historical monument.The museum's origins are tied to Lancelot-Théodore Turpin de Crissé, who bequeathed his extensive collection to the city of Angers in 1859. This collection, comprising antique and medieval objects, paintings, and drawings, formed the foundation of the Musée Pincé. The Musée Pincé's collections have expanded through numerous legacies, donations, and acquisitions. Since the 1970s, the museum has focused on showcasing antique and extra-European collections.The museum's permanent collection is displayed on the first floor and is divided into three main sections: Mediterranean antiquities, pre-Columbian art, and Asian art. The Mediterranean antiquities section includes artifacts from Egypt, Greece, Etruria, and Roman Italy. The Asian art section features Chinese and Japanese art, including a significant collection of Japanese prints and lacquerware. The ground floor hosts temporary exhibitions.
