Place de Stalingrad: Bordeaux's Blue Lion Gateway

Place de Stalingrad, originally named Place du Pont, has evolved from a simple square into a symbol of Bordeaux's urban renewal. Conceived in 1826 during the development of Avenue Thiers, it served as a gateway connecting Bordeaux to Paris. In 1946, it was renamed to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad, a crucial victory for the Soviet army against Nazi Germany.At the beginning of the 21st century, Place de Stalingrad underwent a significant transformation led by architects Olivier Brochet, Emmanuel Lajus, and Christine Pueyo. This revitalization project aimed to create a welcoming space that reflects the district's vibrant atmosphere.The square's most striking feature is the Blue Lion, a contemporary sculpture by Xavier Veilhan installed in 2005. This eight-meter-long, six-meter-high sculpture has become an iconic symbol of the Bastide district, embodying the blend of tradition and modernity that characterizes Bordeaux. The lion's light blue monochrome often merges with the sky, creating a captivating visual.Place de Stalingrad also features the former Alcazar theater, showcasing unique architecture that contrasts with Bordeaux's classic style. The square is a hub for public transportation, with tram and bus lines providing easy access to other parts of the city. It serves as the finish line for the annual Carnival of the Two Shores, further solidifying its integration into Bordeaux's cultural life.
