Getting There

  • Car

    Grotte Saint-Marcel is located off the Route Touristique des Gorges, between Vallon Pont d'Arc and Saint-Martin d'Ardèche. From either town, follow the D290, and look for signs for the Grotte Saint-Marcel. There is a free parking area on-site for visitors. Be aware that parking is only permitted during opening hours.

    While there is train service to Pierrelatte, and bus line 20 connects to Saint-Marcel d'Ardèche, neither option provides direct access to the cave, which is located in Bidon. Taxis or ride-sharing services would be needed from either location to reach the cave. A taxi from Saint-Marcel d'Ardèche to the cave would cost approximately €20-€30.

Archaeological excavations have revealed artifacts from Neanderthal settlements and a 20,000-year-old Paleolithic painting in the 'Lion's Head' cavity.Today, visitors can experience the cave's wonders on guided tours that wind through 400 meters of illuminated passages. Marvel at the colossal chambers, including the Fountain of the Virgin, the Painters' Gallery, and the Kings' Table, adorned with strange concretions and the unique Gours waterfall, a series of over a hundred calcite pools. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 14°C year-round, so dress accordingly.For a unique experience, consider the 'Balade des Lucioles,' a family-friendly lantern-lit tour, or the 'Visite Epicurienne,' combining cave exploration with local wine and product tasting. Since 2013, part of the cave has been used for aging local wines, making it the first wine tourism center in a natural cavity.
