Discover more about Fontaine des Trois Grâces

The Fontaine des Trois Grâces, located in the Place de la Bourse, is a captivating landmark that embodies the artistic and historical essence of Bordeaux. Erected in 1869, the fountain showcases a stunning sculptural ensemble representing the Three Graces: Aglaia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer). These figures, daughters of Zeus in Greek mythology, symbolize beauty, joy, and fertility. The fountain's history is intertwined with the Place de la Bourse, which was built between 1730 and 1775. Before the fountain, the square was home to an equestrian statue of Louis XV, which was destroyed during the French Revolution, and later a statue of Napoleon, which was also removed. The square itself has undergone several name changes, finally becoming Place de la Bourse in 1828. The fountain consists of three bronze statues set atop a white marble pedestal. The Graces are arranged in a circle, their hands clasped, evoking a sense of eternal dance inspired by Renaissance art. Water flows from six masks at the base, symbolizing the connection between civilization and nature. The fountain and the Place de la Bourse were renovated in the 2000s, restoring them to their original splendor. Today, the Fontaine des Trois Grâces stands as a testament to Bordeaux's rich cultural heritage and artistic prowess.
