Walking

Caen Castle is located in the city center and is easily accessible on foot from most central locations. From the Caen train station, it's approximately a 20-minute walk. Public Transport

The Twisto tram and bus network serves Caen. From the Caen train station, take Tram A or Tram B to the Saint-Pierre stop, which is near the castle and the tourist office. A single Twisto ticket costs €1.80 and is valid for one hour.

Caen Castle, or Château de Caen, is a formidable Norman fortress constructed around 1060 by William the Conqueror. Situated in the heart of Caen, the castle has played a pivotal role in Norman and English history, serving as a residence for dukes and kings and a venue for major political assemblies. Its strategic importance is evident in its massive scale, spanning 5.5 hectares, making it one of the largest medieval enclosures in Western Europe. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous transformations. Henry I, William's son, added the Saint George's Church, a keep, and a grand hall for the ducal court. In 1204, the French Crown recaptured Caen Castle, and Philip II reinforced its fortifications. The castle saw action during the Hundred Years' War, and in 1793, the keep was demolished during the French Revolution. Severely damaged during World War II, the castle has since been restored and now serves as a cultural hub. Visitors today can explore the castle's ramparts, offering panoramic views of Caen, and discover the Musée de Normandie, which showcases the region's history and culture, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which features European paintings from the Renaissance and Grand Siècle.
