The Maison des Quatrans, or House of the Quatrans, is a captivating historical site in Caen, offering a glimpse into the city's medieval past. Constructed in the 1460s, this half-timbered building is located on Rue de Geôle, historically one of Caen's most important streets. The house's name is derived from a confusion with another manor, the Manoir du Four Quatrans, which belonged to the Quatrans family. Originally built for Michel Le Fevre, a wealthy tanner, the house showcases the architectural style of the era, with a timber-framed facade facing the street. This design allowed for ample openings and light, a common feature in the city's medieval architecture.Throughout its history, the Maison des Quatrans has undergone several changes. In 1541, a Renaissance-style staircase tower was added in the courtyard. During the Battle of Caen in 1944, the house suffered significant damage, including the destruction of its roofs and a turret. Restoration efforts have been ongoing since, and the building was officially listed as a historical monument in 1953.Today, the Maison des Quatrans houses several cultural associations and serves as a reminder of Caen's rich heritage. While the interior may not always be open to the public, the exterior facade is well-worth a visit, offering a tangible connection to the city's past.
