Discover more about Le Nomade

Le Nomade, a striking sculpture by Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, graces the Bastion Saint-Jaume in Antibes. This monumental artwork, created in 2007 and made a permanent fixture in 2010, is composed of white-painted steel letters arranged to form the shape of a seated figure gazing out towards the Mediterranean Sea. The sculpture stands as a symbol of Antibes, blending art and history in a unique way. The Bastion Saint-Jaume itself has a rich past, having been the site of a Roman temple and chapel, and later a naval shipyard where Jacques Cousteau's Calypso was fitted. Today, the area has been renovated to highlight the fortified remains of the curtain wall, providing a fitting backdrop for Plensa's thought-provoking creation. Le Nomade invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between language, form, and the human presence. The empty space where the figure's face would be allows the sea to become part of the sculpture, creating an ever-changing interaction between the artwork and its environment. The sculpture is particularly photogenic and has become a celebrated landmark in Antibes.
