Located in the historic center of Bourges, the Palais Jacques Coeur is a testament to the ambition and success of Jacques Coeur, a wealthy merchant and financier. Constructed in the flamboyant Gothic style, the palace combines elements of medieval castles with features inspired by Venetian and Florentine palaces. The palace boasts 43 rooms and 8 staircases, covering 4,000 square meters. Its architecture features a separation between private and public areas, reflecting the social customs of the time. The interior is adorned with sculptures, emblems, and realistic depictions of daily life. The palace also features an impressive framework in the attic, resembling the hull of a boat, and a grand ceremonial hall with a monumental fireplace. Jacques Coeur, however, did not get to enjoy his palace for long. He was arrested in 1451, and his property was seized by King Charles VII. The palace later served as a town hall and a courthouse before being recognized as a historical monument in 1840. Today, the Palais Jacques Coeur is managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux and is open to the public.
