The Collégiale Saint-Martin, located in the heart of Colmar, is a significant religious and architectural landmark. Although frequently called the Colmar Cathedral, it has only briefly served as a cathedral. The building stands as the largest church in Colmar and one of the most prominent Gothic structures in the Haut-Rhin region.Construction of the Collégiale Saint-Martin took place from 1235 to 1365, showcasing the evolution of Gothic architecture over more than a century. The church's design is attributed to architects Master Humbret and Guillaume de Marbourg. Built with warm-toned Vosges sandstone, the exterior displays a captivating range of colors from light yellow to violet. The south tower was destroyed by fire in 1572, and was later replaced with a distinctive bulb-shaped lantern.Inside, the Collégiale Saint-Martin features a majestic and luminous atmosphere, characteristic of Gothic design. The interior houses notable elements such as a grand organ and stained glass windows. Although the church suffered damage during the Revolution, preserved medieval sculptures and windows can still be seen.
