The Maison Schongauer, or Maisonnette au Cygne (House of the Swan), stands as a testament to Colmar's rich history and architectural evolution. Constructed in the late 15th century, the building underwent modifications in the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting changing tastes and styles. The house is named after the Schongauer family, prominent in Colmar, most notably for the painter Martin Schongauer. Despite the association, Martin Schongauer himself never lived in this house; however, his brother Ludwig, also an engraver, lived there until around 1495.The main facade, facing Rue des Marchands, features a robust ground floor with two arcades, topped by three stories and a two-story gable. The older elements of the building, oriented towards Rue Schongauer, include two entrance gates, one with an arch adorned with foliage and a finial. These architectural details offer insight into the late Gothic period. The facades and roofs have been listed as historical monuments since June 18, 1929.While you can't enter Maison Schongauer as it is a private residence, admiring it from the outside allows you to appreciate its well-preserved architecture and imagine the lives of those who lived and worked within its walls centuries ago. Its location on Rue des Marchands places it in the heart of Colmar's historic center, surrounded by other notable landmarks and attractions.
