Église Saint-Matthieu: A Gothic Gem in Colmar

Église Saint-Matthieu, or Saint Matthew's Church, is a captivating landmark located in the heart of Colmar's old town. Its history began in the 13th century when Franciscan monks established a monastery on the site. Construction of the current church began in 1292, showcasing the Gothic architectural style of the era with its soaring nave, high vaulted ceilings, and stained-glass windows.In 1543, the city of Colmar acquired the church and converted it into a hospital. The Protestant Reformation swept through Europe in the 16th century, and in 1575, the city council offered Saint-Matthieu Church to the Protestant community. The first official Protestant service was held on May 15, 1575.Today, Saint-Matthieu Church serves as a vital center for the Protestant community in Colmar. The church's remarkable acoustic qualities also make it a venue for concerts during the Colmar International Music Festival. Visitors can admire the intricate stonework, the wooden Christ dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, and the Silbermann organ created in 1731. The church stands as a symbol of Colmar's history and religious tolerance.
