Discover more about Fontaine du vigneron

Nestled at the intersection of Rue des Écoles and Rue des Vignerons in Colmar, the Fontaine du Vigneron offers a glimpse into Alsace's winemaking heritage and artistic legacy. This delightful fountain and statue was created by Auguste Bartholdi, a Colmar native best known for designing the Statue of Liberty. Commissioned in 1867 to adorn the newly constructed covered market, the fountain features a statue of a young Alsatian winegrower. In 1869, the statue of the Little Winemaker was presented at the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris and was met with great success. The statue was inaugurated on August 15, 1869. For many years, it graced the entrance of the covered market, adding a touch of local character. To protect the original statue from the elements, it was moved to the Musée Bartholdi in 1986 and replaced with a replica. The area surrounding the Fontaine du Vigneron is full of history and charm with colorful half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets. Alsace is known for its distinctive white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris.
