Place de la Cathédrale: Colmar's Heart

Place de la Cathédrale is located in the heart of Colmar, and is a vibrant square that seamlessly blends history, architecture, and local life. The square is surrounded by centuries-old buildings, each reflecting the city's diverse cultural influences.The centerpiece of the square is the Cathédrale Saint-Martin, a collegiate church that stands as an example of Gothic architecture in Alsace. Built between 1235 and 1365, it features intricate stonework and stained-glass windows. Although referred to as a cathedral, it was only officially a cathedral for about ten years during the French Revolution. The south tower was damaged by fire in 1572, and was later replaced with a lantern bulb, giving the church its silhouette.Throughout the year, Place de la Cathédrale hosts various events, including seasonal markets and cultural festivals. During the Christmas season, the square transforms into a magical wonderland with a towering Christmas tree and wooden chalets. The square also offers moments of quiet contemplation amidst the activity.In the square, you can also find the old well dating back to 1592, and the Adolph House, which is considered one of the oldest in Colmar, built around 1350.
