Discover more about Annonciade Museum

The Musée de l'Annonciade, established in 1922, stands as a testament to Saint-Tropez's pivotal role in the avant-garde art scene of the early 20th century. The museum is located in a former chapel dating back to 1548, adding a unique architectural dimension to the visitor experience. The collection primarily features paintings from 1890 to 1950, with a focus on the Pointillist, Nabi, and Fauvist movements. The collection features works by renowned artists such as Paul Signac, Henri Matisse, André Derain, Albert Marquet, and Pierre Bonnard. These artists were drawn to Saint-Tropez by its exceptional light and picturesque landscapes. Paul Signac, in particular, played a crucial role in establishing Saint-Tropez as an artistic hub after he discovered the town in 1892. He bought a house, La Hune, and turned it into his studio, inviting many famous painters to visit and work there. The building itself has an interesting history. Originally a chapel built in 1548 by the brotherhood “Les Pénitents Blancs,” it was seized by the state during the French Revolution. In 1829, the bell tower was demolished, and a storey was added to convert the chapel into a shipbuilding workshop. It later fell into disrepair and was used as a warehouse. In the 1950s, the building was renovated by architect Louis Süe, transforming it into a museum. The Musée de l'Annonciade hosts temporary exhibitions in addition to its permanent collection. These exhibitions focus on specific artistic movements, artists, or works, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of modern art.
