Getting There

  • Walking

    From Vieux Nice (Old Town), ascend the steps at the top of Rue Rossetti or Rue des Ponchettes. These routes offer panoramic views and pass by the Cascade de la Colline (waterfall). Alternatively, a free elevator is available at the end of Quai des États-Unis. From the port, follow Montée Montfort, which leads to stairs and winding paths to the top. Note that the final section requires walking.

    Take tram line 2 to the Garibaldi/Le Château stop or line 1 to the Cathédrale/Vieille Ville stop. From either stop, follow the signs and walk uphill towards Colline du Château. A single tram ticket costs €1.70 and is valid for 74 minutes, allowing transfers. Tickets can be purchased at tram stations.

    Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are readily available in Nice. A taxi from the city center to the base of Colline du Château will cost approximately €11-€21, depending on the distance and time of day. From the drop-off point, walking is required to reach the park's entrance.

Colline du Château, rising 92 meters above sea level, is a prominent landmark in Nice, offering some of the most breathtaking views of the city, the Promenade des Anglais, and the Baie des Anges. The hill's history stretches back to around 500 BC when it served as the site of the original Greek settlement of Nikaia. Later, a medieval castle stood here, overlooking the bay, until it was destroyed in 1706 by order of Louis XIV. Today, Colline du Château is a public park, a green oasis offering visitors a tranquil escape with walking paths, play areas, and picnic spots. While little remains of the castle itself, the site is rich with historical significance. Archaeological digs have unearthed Celtic and Roman artifacts, and remnants of an 11th-century cathedral can also be found.
