Discover more about Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne

The Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne stands as a remarkable architectural ensemble in Dijon, revealing centuries of history behind its beautiful classical facade. The oldest part, dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, showcases Gothic ducal palace elements, including a logis, the ducal kitchens, the Tour de Philippe le Bon, and the Tour de Bar. Most of what is visible today, however, was constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries in a neoclassical style, when it served as a royal residence and housed the estates of Burgundy. Originally the seat of the Dukes of Burgundy, the palace was expanded over the years, notably by Philip the Good in the 15th century. In the 17th century, it was united with the Palais des États de Bourgogne. Architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart redesigned the building in 1685, centering it around a courtyard and a royal square. Today, the palace houses the city hall, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, municipal archives, and the tourist office. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, a highlight within the palace, offers free access to its permanent collections. The museum's collections span from antiquity to contemporary art, featuring medieval masterpieces, the tombs of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy, and works by European and Burgundian masters. Visitors can also climb the Tour Philippe le Bon for panoramic views of Dijon. The Chapelle des Élus, accessible through the tourist office, is a hidden gem of Baroque architecture.
