Discover more about Saint Nicolas Tower of Dijon

Rising 32 meters high near Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the Tour Saint-Nicolas is a testament to Dijon's storied past. This impressive tower is what remains of the ancient Saint-Nicolas church, which was the heart of the medieval Saint-Nicolas district. Originally built in the 12th century outside the city walls, the church was associated with a leprosarium. The original church was destroyed during the Alert of Saint-Quentin in 1557, a tumultuous period in the Italian Wars. A replacement chapel suffered a similar fate in 1636 during the approach of Gallas' troops. The current tower is the most visible remnant of the church. The new Saint-Nicolas parish church was consecrated in 1610 but was unfortunately destroyed in 1792 during the French Revolution. Today, the Tour Saint-Nicolas stands as a reminder of Dijon's medieval past. While the church is gone, the tower remains a captivating landmark, offering a glimpse into the city's cultural heritage. The surrounding area, with its cobbled streets and historic buildings, adds to the charm of the experience.
