Discover more about Arquebuse Botanical Garden

The Arquebuse Botanical Garden, nestled in the heart of Dijon, offers a tranquil retreat with a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Spanning 2 hectares within a larger 5-hectare park, the garden's origins trace back to the 16th century when it served as training grounds for arquebus-bearing chevaliers. In the late 18th century, the area was transformed into an English-style garden by the last captain of the chevaliers, inspired by designs from landscaper Jean-Marie Morel. The city acquired the grounds in 1803, and in 1833, it became home to Dijon's first botanical garden, established in 1771 by writer Bénigne Legouz de Gerland. Today, the Arquebuse Botanical Garden is home to nearly 4,000 plant species, with a focus on the flora of the Bourgogne region. Visitors can explore diverse collections, including a systematic collection of 3,352 taxa, regional flora with 1,423 taxa, 789 species of French native plants, and 1,140 species from around the world. These collections showcase ornamental plants, food plants, succulents, carnivorous plants, subtropical plants, and Mediterranean plants. The garden also features an arboretum with 170 species of local and exotic trees, a herbarium containing around 100,000 specimens, greenhouses, and a botany school. In addition to its botanical attractions, the garden includes architectural elements like small loggias and statues, as well as a stream called the Raines, where ducks and swans can be seen. Visitors can also enjoy the rose garden with over 230 varieties of roses, a Natural History Museum, and the Hubert Curien Planetarium. The Arquebuse Botanical Garden is open daily and offers free admission, making it an accessible and enriching experience for all.
