Fame holds a laurel crown above Carnot's head, while Sorrow is depicted as a draped woman. The rear of the monument includes an altar to the homeland, topped with flames, adding a ceremonial dimension to the memorial. The sculptures are the work of Mathurin Moreau and Paul Gasq, with architect Félix Vionnois designing the pedestal.The monument is in the center of Place de la République, surrounded by a water basin with fountains installed during renovations in 2012.
