With origins dating back to the 12th century, the castle has been modified through the Renaissance and 17th centuries, resulting in a unique blend of medieval and later architectural styles. The castle's exterior is famous for its fairytale roofs, featuring a collection of towers, turrets, and allegorical ridges that are considered unique in France. These were added by Antoine Chapelle, the first Count of Jumilhac, in 1597. The castle dominates the surrounding landscape from its position overlooking the confluence of the Isle River and the Ruchalait stream. Inside, visitors can explore various rooms and learn about the castle's history. One notable room is the "Chambre de la Fileuse," where Louise de Hauteford was allegedly confined for thirty years.
