Discover more about Mairie de Limoges

The Mairie de Limoges, inaugurated in 1883, stands proudly on Place Jacques Chirac, a site with historical significance dating back to the ancient Roman forum. Designed by architect Charles-Alfred Leclerc, the building's architecture draws inspiration from the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, blending late Renaissance and Louis XIII styles. The facade, constructed from limestone on a granite base, features symmetrical bays and tall casement windows. The central clock tower, reaching a height of 43 meters, adds to the building's grandeur. The building's facade is adorned with medallions depicting famous figures from Limoges' history: the enameler Léonard Limosin, Chancellor d'Aguesseau, the revolutionary Vergniaud, and Marshal Jourdan. Statues sculpted by Tony Noël, representing goldsmithing and enameling, further celebrate the city's artistic traditions. A stone fountain, designed by Charles Genuys, graces the square in front of the town hall, providing a picturesque spot for visitors. The Mairie de Limoges has witnessed significant historical events, including being stormed by revolutionary guardsmen in 1871, inspired by the Paris Commune. In May 1940, it welcomed the Belgian government in exile during World War II. Today, the Mairie de Limoges remains a vital center for local administration and a symbol of civic pride, designated as a monument historique in 1975.
