Discover more about Villars Cave

Venture into the heart of the Périgord region and discover the Grotte de Villars, a captivating cave system that offers a unique blend of geological wonders and prehistoric art. Discovered in 1953, this remarkable site is the only cave in the area to showcase both original prehistoric paintings and stunning natural concretions. As you descend into the cave, prepare to be amazed by the intricate formations of stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and calcite flows that adorn the chambers and galleries. The underground river has carved out immense spaces, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of nature's artistry. A sound and light show in one of the larger chambers further enhances the experience, bringing the cave's geological history to life. But the Grotte de Villars offers more than just geological wonders. It's also a window into the lives of our prehistoric ancestors. The cave is home to authentic paintings created over 19,000 years ago, depicting animals such as horses, bison, and ibex, as well as rare human representations. These ancient artworks, rendered in red ochre and charcoal, provide a glimpse into the creativity and skill of the Magdalenian people who once inhabited this region. A thin layer of calcite covers some of the paintings, giving them a distinctive blue hue and protecting them from the elements. Extend your visit with a stroll through the Prehistoric Garden, an educational park that explores the world of Cro-Magnon man and his environment. Engage with interactive exhibits, learn about prehistoric hunting techniques, and discover the flora and fauna that coexisted with our ancestors. The Grotte de Villars is more than just a cave; it's a journey through time, offering a fascinating glimpse into both the natural wonders of our planet and the artistic expressions of our earliest ancestors.
