Discover more about Royal Fort

Located on Île Sainte-Marguerite, the Royal Fort stands as a testament to centuries of history. Constructed between 1624 and 1627, the fort was initially a modest fortified house intended to block sea access to Cannes. Over time, it evolved into a strategic military structure, notably under the direction of Vauban, who transformed it into a formidable citadel. The fort's history is intertwined with the famous story of the Man in the Iron Mask, who was imprisoned here during the reign of Louis XIV. Visitors can explore the prison cells and learn about the mysteries surrounding this enigmatic figure. The Sea Museum, housed within the fort since 1978, showcases archaeological finds from both land and underwater excavations, including Roman cisterns and artifacts from shipwrecks. Île Sainte-Marguerite itself offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The island is covered with forests of pine and eucalyptus, crisscrossed by marked trails that invite exploration. The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding sea and the city of Cannes. Today, the Royal Fort also hosts a youth hostel, offering accommodation and activities for various groups.
