Discover more about Grotte De Dargilan

The Grotte de Dargilan, often called the Pink Cave due to its accentuated natural hues, is a captivating natural wonder located near Meyrueis in the Lozère department of France. As the largest cave in the Causses and Cévennes area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, it draws visitors with its impressive dimensions and diverse concretions. The cave was discovered in 1880 by a shepherd named Sahuquet while he was chasing a fox. However, it wasn't until 1888 that Édouard-Alfred Martel, considered the father of French speleology, fully explored the site. The cave opened to the public in 1890, becoming the first cave in France to offer organized tours. Visitors can explore a 1 km trail showcasing a variety of geological features. The tour begins in a massive chamber, one of the largest underground chambers in France, measuring 140 m long, 50 m wide, and up to 25 m high. A highlight is the 2,000 m² flowstone waterfall, believed to be the largest on Earth. The cave is adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, crystalline lakes, and the "Clocher," a 15.4 m high and 9 m wide column estimated to weigh around 120 tons. The cave's unique pink color comes from the natural hues of its concretions, ranging from ochre to orange. New dynamic LED lighting enhances the site, highlighting its volumes and details while protecting the environment. The guided tour, led by passionate guides, lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 10°C, so warm clothing is recommended.
