Discover more about Château de Champs-sur-Marne

The Château de Champs-sur-Marne, a jewel of classical architecture, is located in the Seine-et-Marne department, in the Île-de-France region. Built in the 18th century, this stately home provides a taste of the French art de vivre. The Château has played host to dukes, duchesses, marquises, and even literary giants like Voltaire, Diderot, and Marcel Proust. The Château's history began in 1699 when it was built for treasurer Charles Renouard de la Touane by Pierre Bullet. After Renouard de la Touane went bankrupt, the project was taken over by Paul Poisson de Bourvalais. Jean-Baptiste Bullet de Chamblain, Pierre Bullet's son, completed the château in 1706. Over the years, it was owned by the princesse de Conti, the duc de La Vallière, and the marquise de Pompadour, each leaving their mark on the estate. Louis Cahen d'Anvers, a banker, purchased the property in 1895 and began a series of renovations. The estate was modernized in 1959 to prepare it for visiting heads of state. Visitors can explore the Château's neoclassical rooms, filled with over 900 pieces of furniture made by renowned craftsmen. Highlights include the Chinese room, the smoking room, and the monochrome boudoir. The Château is surrounded by 85 hectares of parkland, featuring French and English gardens. Designed by Claude Desgots, a student of André Le Nôtre, the gardens offer a royal promenade. The Château de Champs-sur-Marne has also served as a filming location for over 80 films, including 'Dangerous Liaisons' and Sofia Coppola's 'Marie-Antoinette'.
