The Flame of Liberty (Flamme de la Liberté) is a striking monument in Paris, standing as a potent symbol of the Franco-American alliance. This full-sized, gold-leaf-covered replica of the Statue of Liberty's torch , reaches approximately 3.5 meters in height. The flame is crafted from gilded copper and rests upon a pedestal of gray-and-black marble. In 1989, the International Herald Tribune presented the Flame of Liberty to Paris , commemorating the newspaper's centennial of publishing an English-language daily in the city. It also served as a gesture of gratitude for the French artisans who contributed to the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Métalliers Champenois handled the bronze work, and Gohard Studios applied the gold leaf. Located near the northern end of the Pont de l'Alma, on the Place Diana in the 8th arrondissement , the monument has also become an unofficial memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales, following her tragic death in 1997 in the tunnel beneath the Pont de l'Alma. Visitors often leave flowers and messages at its base , adding a layer of poignant remembrance to the site. The site was officially named Place Diana in 2019. The Flame of Liberty stands as a reminder of the values of freedom, democracy, and the enduring bond between France and the United States.
