Construction began in 1713, was paused, and then resumed in 1730, finally reaching completion in 1749. The chapel owes its existence to the Congregation of the Oratory of Jesus, who established a seminary in Avignon.The architectural design is particularly striking, featuring an elliptical nave and cupola supported by Corinthian columns, drawing the eye toward the altar. The facade boasts a grand portico adorned with paired Corinthian pilasters and two concentric ellipses enclosed within a rectangular structure. This unique design reflects the Oratorians' focus on preaching, teaching, and spreading the faith.During the French Revolution, the chapel was repurposed as a Patriotic Club and later as an ammunition depot. In 1825, it was returned to its original purpose as a place of worship and is now part of the Saint Agricol parish.Today, the Chapelle de l'Oratoire stands as a beautifully restored monument historique, classified since 1912. The chapel is a place of peace and occasionally hosts performances during the Avignon Festival.
