Église Saint-Roch de Montpellier is a prominent Catholic church dedicated to Montpellier's patron saint, Roch. The church's construction was initiated by the municipality in 1861, with the first stone laid in 1862, and completed in 1867. The building stands on the site of the former Église Saint-Paul, which was destroyed in 1622 during the siege of Montpellier.The church was designed in the neo-Gothic style by architect Jean Cassan, drawing inspiration from the grand Gothic sanctuaries of northern France. However, the initial plans, which included a transept, apses, and two spires, were only partially realized due to insufficient funds. The interior features three naves illuminated by stained glass windows and a large rose window. A notable feature is the elliptical shape of the central nave pillars, reminiscent of the Valmagne Abbey. The choir, though smaller than planned, is brightened by a large stained glass window depicting Saint Roch.Throughout the year, pilgrims visit the church to pay their respects to Saint Roch, whose relics are housed within its walls. The church also hosts cultural events, including concerts, enhancing its role within the community. Facing the church is a large trompe-l'œil mural, which has become a popular spot for photographs.
