Discover more about Gare de Limoges-Bénédictins

The Gare de Limoges-Bénédictins is more than just a train station; it's an architectural marvel and a symbol of the city. Opened in 1929, it replaced an earlier, smaller station built in 1860. The station's name comes from a Benedictine monastery that once stood nearby. The station was designed by architect Roger Gonthier, who also designed the central market halls in Limoges. A unique feature of the station is that it was constructed above the railway lines, rather than alongside them. This design choice required the creation of a large concrete platform to support the station building. The architectural style is a blend of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Neoclassical elements. The facades are adorned with sculptures by Henri Frédéric Varenne, representing the industrial activities of the city, including porcelain and enamel production. Inside, the station is equally impressive, with a large dome covering the passenger concourse. The dome is made of a metallic framework covered in copper, and the interior is decorated with stained glass by master glassmaker Francis Chigot, featuring foliage and chestnuts, the emblem of the Limousin region. One of the most striking features of the station is its 67-meter-tall clock tower. The tower is visible from all over the city and has four large clocks. In November 2022, the Gare de Limoges-Bénédictins was voted the most beautiful station in France, a testament to its architectural significance and cultural importance.
