Discover more about Domaine de l'Hortus

Domaine de l'Hortus, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region, is a captivating destination for wine lovers and those seeking a taste of the French countryside. Situated in Valflaunès, just north of Montpellier, the domaine lies nestled between the imposing Pic Saint-Loup and the equally impressive Montagne de l'Hortus, two geological landmarks that define the landscape and contribute to the unique terroir. The story of Domaine de l'Hortus began in the late 1970s when Jean Orliac, an agricultural graduate with a passion for rock climbing, recognized the untapped potential of the abandoned land at the foot of these dramatic cliffs. With his wife, Marie-Thérèse, he embarked on a challenging journey to revive the vineyards, clearing the scrubland and planting grape varieties carefully selected to suit the diverse soils and microclimates. Today, Domaine de l'Hortus spans over 80 hectares, a testament to the Orliac family's dedication and vision. The vineyards are planted on limestone scree slopes, benefiting from excellent drainage and exposure to the sun. The altitude and the cool breezes from the nearby Cévennes mountains create a unique microclimate that contributes to the finesse and freshness of the wines. The domaine cultivates a variety of grape varieties, including Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre for the reds, and Viognier, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc for the whites. Each variety is planted in the specific location that best suits its characteristics, resulting in wines that are both expressive and balanced. Visitors to Domaine de l'Hortus are welcomed with open arms. The estate offers guided tours of the vineyards and winery, providing insights into the winemaking process from grape to bottle. The tasting room offers a range of wines to sample, from the refreshing Bergerie de l'Hortus to the more complex Grande Cuvée. Knowledgeable staff are on hand to guide you through the tasting, explaining the nuances of each wine and the story behind it. The wines of Domaine de l'Hortus are widely recognized as some of the finest in the Languedoc. They are characterized by their elegance, complexity, and aging potential. The reds are typically full-bodied with aromas of black fruit, spice, and garrigue, while the whites are crisp and aromatic with notes of citrus, flowers, and minerality. Beyond the wine, Domaine de l'Hortus offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. The surrounding area is dotted with prehistoric cave dwellings and medieval ruins, offering opportunities for hiking and exploration.
