Overview
Villa Strassburger, located near the Deauville-La Touques Racecourse, is more than just a building; it's a portal to the past, offering a captivating glimpse into the lives of the wealthy and influential during Deauville's golden age. Constructed between 1907 and 1912 by architect Georges Pichereau for Baron Henri de Rothschild, a member of the renowned Rothschild banking family, the villa initially bore the name 'Ferme du Coteau,' as it was built on land purchased from Gustave Flaubert's family. Disappointed by the limited sea view, the Rothschilds sold the property in 1924 to Ralph Beaver Strassburger, an American newspaper publisher and owner of a successful racing stable. Strassburger and his wife, May Bourne, transformed the villa into a lavish summer residence, hosting extravagant parties and welcoming prominent figures from the worlds of art, business, and society. The Strassburgers, passionate about horse racing, were drawn to Deauville's prestigious racing scene, keeping stables at the nearby Haras des Monceaux. The villa provided stunning views of the Deauville Racecourse, where their thoroughbreds competed for Les Grandes Prix. The villa's architecture is a prime example of the Anglo-Norman style, blending traditional Norman elements with influences from the Renaissance. The exterior features half-timbered facades, brickwork arranged in a checkerboard pattern, and elaborate roof projections adorned with ceramic finials. A large awning graces nearly all of the villa's facades, while turrets, bow windows, and a spacious terrace add to its picturesque charm. The surrounding park, planted with apple trees, further enhances the villa's Norman character. During World War II, the villa was occupied by German officers, who made some alterations for their comfort. After the war, the Strassburgers redecorated the house, creating the opulent style that is still visible today. In 1980, their son, Peter Strassburger, donated the villa and its contents to the city of Deauville, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Stepping inside Villa Strassburger is like stepping back in time. The villa's interior is meticulously preserved, showcasing period furniture, family portraits, and a collection of horse paintings and caricatures. The ground floor features a central hall leading to a smoking room, living room, dining room, and office. A grand staircase leads to the private apartments on the upper floors, including the guest rooms. Ralph Strassburger's office contains a vintage telephone, a 1957 diary, and a 1952 telephone directory, offering a glimpse into his daily life. The villa also boasts modern amenities for its time, such as a sauna in the master bathroom. Today, Villa Strassburger is open to the public for guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its rich history and admire its architectural beauty. The villa can also be rented for private events, providing a unique and elegant setting for weddings, seminars, and conferences. The villa's three salons on the ground floor, totaling 170 square meters, open onto a terrace with views of the surrounding gardens. Visiting Villa Strassburger offers a unique opportunity to experience the glamour and sophistication of Deauville's Belle Époque. The villa's stunning architecture, meticulously preserved interiors, and rich history make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in the history of Deauville and the lives of its wealthy residents.
