Getting There

Walking

From the center of Grimaud village, follow the signs uphill towards the Château de Grimaud. The walk takes you through the narrow, winding streets of the village, passing by the Chapelle des Pénitents. The path is steep in places and involves some steps. Allow approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the castle entrance. There are no costs involved in this final approach.
Public Transport

Take the Varlib bus line 7702 to Grimaud. Get off at either 'Grimaud Village' or 'Grimaud: Les Migraniers'. From the bus stop, walk uphill following the signs to the castle, using the Chapelle des Pénitents as a landmark. The walk from either bus stop to the castle is approximately 20-30 minutes. A single bus fare costs around €3. Keep in mind that the bus schedules vary depending on the season.
Parking

Drive towards Grimaud village and follow signs for 'Parking du Château' or 'Eglise'. Free parking is available close to the house (rue du Cabro d'Or - Parking du Château). Limited parking is available on the Nord side of the castle. Take the longer drive to the parking/cemetery around the old part of the village to avoid the narrow streets. From the parking area, it is a short hike up a dirt path and some stairs to the ruins. Parking is free.

Its origins trace back to the 11th century when it was constructed by monks from Saint-Victor de Marseille. Strategically positioned, the fortified castle played a vital role in defending the region, commanding the Garde valley and offering unobstructed views of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.Over the centuries, the castle was home to several prominent families, including the Counts of Provence, King Charles II, and the powerful Castellane family. Each left their mark on the structure, with the Castellanes notably expanding the castle in the mid-18th century by adding the south towers. However, during the French Revolution, the Castellane family fled, and the castle was pillaged and used as a stone quarry, leading to its destruction.Today, the Château de Grimaud is classified as a historical monument and has undergone restoration efforts since the 1980s. Visitors can explore the ruins, including the main structure with its thick stone walls and the partially ruined keep, which still offers panoramic views. The entrance and inner courtyard, once protected by a drawbridge, evoke the bustling life of the garrison and seigneurial court. The castle also serves as a venue for cultural events, including summer concerts and theatrical performances. A visit to the Château de Grimaud is free and open to the public year-round.
