Place du Vieux-Marché, or Old Market Square, is one of Rouen's most historically significant and atmospheric public spaces. It is most famous as the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. A tall, modern cross now marks the location of her execution, serving as a solemn reminder of this pivotal moment in French history. Her ashes were gathered and tossed into the Seine.
The square also features the modern Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, constructed in the 1970s, which houses stunning stained-glass windows salvaged from the destroyed Church of Saint Vincent. The unique church in the city center was built in the shape of an inverted boat in the 16th century.
