Cour du Corbeau: A Renaissance Jewel

The Cour du Corbeau, nestled in the heart of Strasbourg, is a captivating journey back in time. This architectural gem, also known as the Raven's Courtyard, has been listed as a historical monument since 1930 and exemplifies Renaissance half-timber architecture. Its history dates back to 1528 when it was established as an inn named 'Zum Rappen'. For over three centuries, the inn played host to a string of well-known figures, including the Duke of Bavaria, Swedish General Gustav Horn, Marshall Turenne, King John Casimir of Poland, King Frederick II of Prussia (incognito), and Emperor Josef of Austria (also incognito). The inn closed its doors in 1854. Subsequently, the Ott glassmaking brothers took over the courtyard and its surroundings, continuing their business until 1982. After a period of neglect, the Cour du Corbeau was purchased by an investment group and underwent extensive renovations, reopening as a luxury hotel in 2009. The restoration aimed to preserve the building's original character, with careful attention to detail in restoring carved wood façades and balusters. The hotel now features 63 rooms that blend historical charm with modern amenities. The hotel also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and local engagement, earning the Clé Verte label in 2025. Visitors can appreciate the beauty and atmosphere of the courtyard, characterized by its wooden galleries, half-timbered buildings, and a wooden walkway connecting the two sides.
