Getting There

  • Car

    From Sainte-Enimie or Meyrueis, follow the D986 to Carnac, then take the D43/D16 towards Rieisse/Roc des Hourtous. Parking is available at the Roc des Hourtous belvedere. Parking is free. Be aware that parking can be limited.

  • Public Transport

    During the summer (July 8 to September 1), the LiO bus line 258 runs from Florac and Le Rozier to La Malène. From La Malène, you will need to take local roads D43/D16 to Rieisse/Roc des Hourtous, approximately 5km away. Bus fare is approximately €2.

  • Walking

    From La Malène, the trail to Roc des Hourtous is approximately 5km. Follow the D43/D16 towards Rieisse/Roc des Hourtous. Be prepared for an uphill walk. There are also local walking trails to La Malène.

The Sentier Oiseaux des Causses et des Gorges is a delightful 2.8 km (1.75 miles) loop trail located near La Malène in the heart of the Gorges du Tarn. This easy hike is perfect for families and anyone interested in birdwatching, offering a blend of natural beauty and opportunities to observe the region's diverse avian life. The trail begins at the Roc des Hourtous belvedere, offering immediate panoramic views of the Tarn Gorge. The path then leads into the undergrowth, where interpretive panels provide insights into the various bird species that inhabit the area. Keep an eye out for griffon vultures soaring overhead, as well as smaller birds flitting through the trees. As you walk, the trail edges along the cliffs of the Causse Méjean, providing stunning vistas of the Détroits des Gorges du Tarn and the hamlet of La Croze below. The route then loops back through the forest and opens onto the dry grasslands where Lacaune sheep graze. These sheep produce the milk for Roquefort cheese, a local specialty. The trail passes through the village of Rieisse, featuring traditional Caussenarde stone houses and a communal oven. The final stretch follows a paved road back to the Roc des Hourtous belvedere. The trail is an initiative of the Méjean school in La Parade, with drawings by the students displayed at various points of interest along the way. This adds a unique and charming touch to the experience, making it both educational and enjoyable for all ages.
