The Chapelle Expiatoire, or Expiatory Chapel, stands as a poignant reminder of the French Revolution and its victims. Located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, on Square Louis XVI, this chapel was constructed between 1815 and 1826 during the Restoration period. King Louis XVIII commissioned the chapel to commemorate his brother, Louis XVI, and Queen Marie Antoinette, who were initially buried on this site after their execution by guillotine. The chapel was designed by Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine, a prominent architect who also worked for Napoleon. The architecture is Neoclassical, drawing inspiration from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. The chapel's design includes a square nave topped with a cupola featuring coffers and protruding rosettes. Inside, visitors can see sculptures of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The crypt features a black marble altar marking the spot where the remains of the monarchs were once located. The site's history is particularly significant. During the Revolution, the former Madeleine Cemetery held the remains of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and approximately 500 others who were guillotined at the Place de la Révolution (now Place de la Concorde). Today, the Chapelle Expiatoire stands as a historical monument, classified in 1914, offering visitors a glimpse into a tumultuous period of French history. The chapel also features a garden, which adds to the site's peaceful atmosphere.
