    Discover more about La Madeleine

La Madeleine, or Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, is a prominent Catholic church located on Place de la Madeleine in Paris's 8th arrondissement. Unlike traditional Gothic cathedrals, La Madeleine boasts a neoclassical design inspired by Roman temples, making it a unique architectural landmark in the city. The church's history is intertwined with French political and artistic movements. Originally commissioned by Louis XV in 1764, construction was interrupted by the French Revolution. Napoleon I later envisioned it as a Temple to the Glory of the Grand Army. After Napoleon's fall, King Louis XVIII restored the building's religious purpose, dedicating it to St. Mary Magdalene. The church was finally completed and consecrated in 1842. La Madeleine features 52 Corinthian columns, each 20 meters tall, encircling the building. The exterior is adorned with sculptures, including a pediment depicting the Last Judgment. Inside, the church has a single nave with three domes, creating a dimly lit and awe-inspiring atmosphere. Notable interior features include a statue of St. Mary Magdalene above the high altar and a grand pipe organ considered one of the best in Paris. The church has a weekly market every Monday and Friday morning. Throughout the year, classical music concerts are held at La Madeleine.
