Discover more about Château de Rambouillet

The Château de Rambouillet, nestled in the town of Rambouillet, is a captivating journey through French history. Originally a fortified manor in 1368, it evolved into a pleasure residence, hosting kings, emperors, and presidents. King Francis I died within its walls in 1547, and Napoleon I spent his last night in France here. Louis XVI acquired the château in 1783, and to appease his wife, Marie Antoinette, who found the castle unappealing, he commissioned the exquisite Laiterie de la Reine (Queen's Dairy). This neoclassical temple features Sèvres porcelain buckets and a marble statue of Amalthea, offering a glimpse into the queen's playful farm life. Another highlight is the Chaumière aux Coquillages (Shell Cottage), adorned with thousands of seashells, mother-of-pearl, and marble fragments. From 1896 to 2009, the château served as the summer residence for the Presidents of France. General Charles de Gaulle established his headquarters here in 1944 before the liberation of Paris. The first G6 meeting was hosted here in 1975. Today, managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, the Château de Rambouillet invites visitors to explore its historic rooms, admire its elegant decor, and wander through its vast gardens. The park blends French and English garden styles, featuring canals, islands, and the charming Queen's Dairy and Shell Cottage.
